The daily life of a jewelry designer: How I use a garment steamer to maintain the texture of clothes and work
Over the years of doing jewelry design, I have come to realize one thing: details are magnified.
In the studio, every day I am confronted with gemstones of millimeter-sized dimensions with extremely subtle variations in luster, as well as precisely crafted metal structures. When you get used to viewing the world through a magnifying glass, you will also start to notice many details in your daily life, such as the wrinkles on a piece of clothing.
When many clients first visit the studio, they are often drawn to the tools on the table - forceps, files, gem clamps, magnifying glasses. But right next to the hangers, there is something that is used almost every day: a garment steamer.
It seemed very ordinary at first, but gradually it became a very important tool in my life.
Why is keeping clothes tidy important for designers?
The common impression people have of jewelry designers is probably of them sitting at a desk, sketching out designs, selecting gemstones, and making jewelry.
These are all part of the job, of course, but there is another thing that is often overlooked: communicating with people.
Customers come to the studio with their own stories.
Some are preparing to purchase engagement rings, some are customizing necklaces for their anniversaries, and others are wanting to redesign family heirlooms.
In these situations, clothing actually conveys a lot of information.
I don't strive for overly fancy outfits. Most of the time, I just wear simple shirts, skirts or suit jackets. But there is one thing I really care about - the clothes must be clean, neat and have a good texture.
This is also the reason why I started to use the garment steamer frequently.
This was my first time using a garment steamer to iron my clothes seriously.
It was the day before a design exhibition several years ago.
I took out the prepared white silk shirt from the suitcase, only to find that it was almost all wrinkled. A regular ironing iron not only requires an ironing board, but also tends to leave marks on the silk. At that time, there happened to be someone in the backstage of the exhibition hall who brought a garment steamer.
I remember it very clearly.
The shirt is hung on the hanger, and steam slowly rises from the hem. After a few seconds, the wrinkles start to disappear, and the fabric looks soft and natural.
At that moment, I suddenly understood the charm of steam treatment:
It doesn't flatten the clothes; instead, it allows the fibers to return to their original state.
Since then, the garment steamer has become a common tool in my daily life.
Why are jewelry designers particularly suitable for using steam ironing machines?
If you are working in a creative field, such as design, photography, or art, you might understand this feeling: visual details are extremely important.
The steam ironing machine has several particularly practical functions in my professional life.
1.Quickly tidy up your clothes before meeting the client.
Often, customers will make last-minute reservations.
If the clothes have some wrinkles, using a steam ironing machine usually only takes a few minutes. A shirt or a skirt can be restored to its neat state very quickly.
2. Arrange the fabric when shooting the work
In jewelry photography, backdrop materials such as velvet, linen or cotton are often used.
If these fabrics have creases, the photo will show them very clearly. Steam can quickly make the fabrics flat.
3. Protect delicate fabrics
I usually prefer to wear silk and wool clothes. The traditional iron is too hot and can easily damage these materials, while steam is much gentler.
Which types of clothing are best suited for using a steam ironing machine?
During the long-term use of the garment steamer, I gradually accumulated some experience.
Silk shirt
Silk is prone to wrinkling, but it is also suitable for steam treatment.
Steam can relax the fibers without leaving any indentations.
Dress
Many dresses have intricate cuts, such as pleats or ruffles.
Steam is easier to use than traditional irons when dealing with these structures.
Suit jackets
Minor wrinkles don't really require dry cleaning.
Steam can make the fabric regain its shape and also reduce the odor.
Wool coat
Steam can make the wool fibers regain their fullness and give the fabric a more textured appearance.
My daily habit of using the steam ironing machine
When I first started using the garment steamer, I actually made quite a few minor mistakes. But later, I gradually figured out some simple but very practical methods.
Steam rises from the bottom upwards.
Starting from the hem of the garment, the steam naturally spreads upwards.
Keep a little distance.
The steam nozzle doesn't need to touch the clothes. About one or two centimeters is sufficient.
Gently straighten the fabric.
Use the other hand to gently hold the hem of the garment for better results.
After steaming, let the clothes hang for a while.
Usually, in two or three minutes, the clothes will completely regain their dryness.
One of the tools I can't live without during travel
As a designer, I often have to travel to different cities to meet clients or attend exhibitions.
There are many ironing devices in the hotel, but I seldom use them. The reason is quite simple:
- The ironing board may not be clean.
- The temperature of the iron is difficult to control.
- Complex fabrics are difficult to handle.
The lightweight steam ironing machine is actually more suitable for travel.
Once, I was on a business trip in New York and was preparing to meet a new client. My shirt was severely compressed in the suitcase. Ten minutes later, the shirt looked as if it had just been taken out of the closet.
At that moment, I realized that the condition of one's clothes actually affects their sense of confidence.
Steam treatment is actually a kind of lifestyle.
After I started using the steam ironing machine frequently, I gradually realized that it was much more than just a tool for ironing clothes.
It can also:
- Remove light odors from clothes
- Refresh curtains and fabric items
- Restore the soft texture of scarves and shawls
- Make the old clothes in the closet look newer
In some lifestyle blogs (such as the ones I occasionally come across on Nesugar), many people also mention similar experiences: Steam treatment is actually a more relaxed way of managing clothes.
When the pace of life becomes increasingly fast, simple and effective methods tend to be easier to adhere to.
For me, tidiness is a professional attitude.
Jewelry design is a profession that places great emphasis on details.
The proportions of a ring, the facets of the gemstones, and the polishing of the metal all require repeated refinement. Over time, this sensitivity to details also affects many aspects of life.
Whether the clothes are neatly dressed or not may seem like a minor matter, but it can greatly affect one's overall appearance.
Often, what makes something look truly exquisite is not the expensive clothes, but the details.
For me, the garment steamer is just a small tool that can help maintain these details.
Final Note
Over the years of doing design work, I have come to appreciate a simpler lifestyle more and more.
No need for too many complicated tools, nor the need to strive for perfection. Just a few practical little habits can make daily life more comfortable.
The steam ironing machine is just such a device.
It won't change your wardrobe or your style. But when you get used to spending a few minutes organizing your clothes before going out, you'll find -
Tidiness is actually a kind of very quiet confidence.
