Over the years as a company driver, I have come to realize one thing: You represent not just yourself.
When I first started working as a company driver, I didn’t think too much about it.
I thought the job was quite simple—
Just follow the schedule, know the route well, drive steadily, and drop passengers at their destination.
Later, I gradually realized that it wasn’t like that.
The job of a company driver can be simply described as part of the company’s image. Many customers’ first interaction with a company doesn’t happen in a meeting room, but in the car. That time from the airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to the office, is the first impression they have of whether this company is reliable or not.
The person sitting in the driver’s seat is subconsciously seen as a part of the company.
How you are dressed, how you’re feeling, and whether you are tidy or not—all of these will be noticed.
Even if the other person doesn’t say a word.
For a driver, the requirement for appearance is not “good looks,” but “stability.”
It was only later that I realized the appearance standards for company drivers were actually quite strict.
You shouldn’t be too casual, but neither should you be too deliberate.
Don’t look tired, and don’t be too ostentatious.
More than anything, it’s a sense of “reassurance.”
And clothes are the part that is most prone to getting out of control.
Because our working conditions don’t really allow clothes to stay in perfect condition.
Most of the time, I’m actually not driving.
This is something many people don’t realize.
The actual time I spend driving each day might only account for a small portion.
The rest of the time is spent waiting.
Waiting for flights, waiting for meetings, waiting for calls, waiting for temporary changes.
Sometimes I would sit there for an hour or two.
The car is not very spacious, and once you take a fixed position, it’s impossible for your clothes not to get wrinkled.
Especially for shirts and suit jackets, the areas on the back and the waist are the most noticeable.
Before, I would just shrug it off and think it didn’t matter, since everyone was busy.
But after doing it for a while, I realized that the details you don’t pay attention to, others will remember silently.
I began to pay attention to clothes because of a very minor embarrassment.
That time, I was picking up a client with whom we had a long-term cooperation.
When the other person got into the car, he was very polite and chatted normally throughout the journey.
Before getting out of the car, he casually said, “You look a bit tired today.”
I was actually in a great state of mind that day and had gotten enough sleep.
When I looked in the mirror at home, I realized what the problem was.
The shirt was very wrinkled, the collar was a bit sagging, and I clearly didn’t look in good shape.
At that moment, I realized that clothes are not just decorations; they are signals.
For me, an iron has always seemed rather impractical.

The question is:

However, the job of a driver rarely offers you these benefits.

No more than five minutes.
These five minutes are not for show, but to give me peace of mind.
At least I know that today I won’t have trouble because of what I’m wearing.
While waiting, clothes tend to “age quickly.”
Sitting in the car for a long time is a nightmare for clothes.
Previously, I wore a coat all day long. When I got out of the car in the evening, the entire coat was sagging.
